about

BRISA

Based in Fukuoka Japan, DJ/producer Brisa started his career in 1997 after being strongly influenced by acid jazz and house music in the 1990s. He started producing his own music in 2004 and has since released music worldwide, including in Japan, the UK, the US, Germany, France, and Italy. His work has been met with positive feedback from artists including Jazzanova, Danny Krivit, Joe Claussell, DJ Yellow, Tom Middleton, Gilles Peterson, and Lefto. Brisa released his major debut album Elevation Perception from Geneon Entertainment. The album was a huge success and featured cross-genre collaborations with Monday Michiru, Paul Randolph, and more. The success of his debut led to him playing at one of the biggest jazz/crossover festivals in Tokyo, the Tokyo Crossover Jazz Festival (2012). In 2013, he had a string of releases on renowned labels like Jazzy Sport, Reverse, and Best of Records. Support for these releases began at the promotional stage from artists Lefto, Simbad, Kev Beadle, Kyoto Jazz Massive, Toshio Matsuura, Cosmopolyphonic, block.fm, and more. In May 2014, he released Rollin' / GIMMELUV on Bandcamp and it was immediately picked up by Gilles Peterson for the BBC’s Radio 6. His next release (Perfect World / Speak To Me) also received huge support from Lefto, Eddy Ramich, Mad Mats, and Lay-Far. In October of 2015, he digitally released the first DJ Mix of his career with “Evoke 01” via Rambling Records. He followed this in October of 2016 with Wide Awake, his second album (via Bandcamp). Joey Negro kicked off wide-ranging support for Brisa’s remix of Aroop Roy’s “Talkin’ Bout Life” and the track became a long-running hit. In 2019, his release “Brick Bounce/Abacaxi” was selected for inclusion in Bandcamp Weekly, and he formed a live performance duo called Ohnesty with Fukuoka beatmaker Shigge. His September 2019 EP has been picked up for playlists on the BBC, Worldwide FM radio, and Spotify. His projects cross a wide range of fields; currently, in addition to running his regular Tokyo party NXTDOOR, he plays alongside resident DJs throughout Japan and works in sound production/commercial music production. Edginess and musical depth coexist in his work. His freeform, connect-the-dots style has been highly acclaimed in Japan and overseas.
